Chingay

Chingay is a flamboyant street parade popular amongst the Chinese community held annually in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festivities. The Chingay tradition began in 1973 as a way of appeasing the population upset with a ban on fire crackers. Despite being associated with the Chinese New Year festivities, Chingay is also popular amongst the Indian and Malay communities living in Singapore making it a unifying cultural event that has become a major tourist attraction in Singapore.
